West Sedona is the main commercial area in Sedona. It is where you will find Sedona’s grocery stores, banks, and residential areas. West Sedona is also the place to find interesting shops, the local movie theater, restaurants, book stores, state parks, scenic drives, hikes and sightseeing spots. There are a number of hotel and resort options in West Sedona, including The Southwest Inn, The Kokopelli Suites, The Sedona Rouge and Casa Sedona along with familiar hotel chains such as The Hampton Inn, The Best Western Inn of Sedona, The Days Inn and the Super 8.
West Sedona is close to some of the most scenic drives in the area. You can travel up Airport Road to Airport Mesa, down Dry Creek Road to Boynton Canyon, and down Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop Road to two picturesque State Parks, Crescent Moon Ranch and Red Rock State Park.
If you choose to drive west on 89A, you will find some beautiful parks. Head south down Lower Red Rock Loop Road for a picturesque journey to Red Rock State Park. Red Rock State Park offers a picnic retreat at Red Rock Crossing. This is one of the most photographed locations in the world. If you continue around to Upper Red Rock Loop Road, you will see the entrance to Crescent Moon Ranch, another great recreation area for swimming in the creek, picnics and hiking.
Another scenic drive with amazing views takes you up to Airport Mesa. As you ascend to the top of this long hill, you’ll see the parking area for a breath-taking scenic overlook. You’ll see majestic mountains and the historic mining town of Jerome in the distance to the west. You will be treated to views of famous Sedona rock formations such as Chimney Rock, the Cockscomb and up close and personal with Thunder Mountain and Coffee Pot Rock. This scenic overlook is extremely popular as many gather here at sunset each evening to experience amazing Sedona sunsets.
As you travel up to Airport Mesa, you’ll see a parking area to your left. Here you can take a short hike up a knoll and get full 360 degree views. This area is considered a spiritual energy location, locally known as a vortex, so you may have the unique experience of Sedona energy here. If nothing else, you can tell the folks back home you sat on a vortex!
Once on top of Airport Mesa, past the scenic vista point, the road leads you to the Sedona Airport. This is the departure location for any scenic flights and air tours of the region. Several airplane and helicopter companies out of the airport terminal. Seeing Sedona from the air is an amazing and memorable experience.
Another spectacular scenic drive is out to the western canyons via Dry Creek Road.
On the west end of town , you will see Dry Creek Road. Turn right onto Dry Creek Road for great views of rock formations like The Cockscomb, Devil’s Bridge, Thunder Mountain, and Chimney Rock. Boynton Canyon, Fay Canyon, Bear Mountain, Doe Mesa and Vultee Arch are outstanding hiking options from easy to difficult (see our hiking section for more details). Dry Creek Road is about one mile in length. When you arrive at the end of the road, turn left onto Boynton Canyon Road and you’ll continue towards Boynton Canyon, Doe Mesa, Bear Mountain and Fay Canyon. Along the way, you’ll spot trail heads on the right and the left.
